Orchestras(4)

The history of the modern orchestra that we are familiar with today goes all the way today goes all the way back to an ancient Egypt. The first orchestras were made up of small groups of musicians that gathered for festivals, holidays or funerals. During the time of the Roman Empire, the government suppressed non-governmental musicians and informal ensembles were banned, but they reappeared after the Empire fell. It wasn't until the eleventh century that families of instruments started to appear with differences in tones and octaves.【신성찬 기자와 함께 TOEFL READING 즐기기】2018년 5월 6일

True modern orchestras started in the late sixteenth century when composers started writing music for instrumental groups, though the instruments used then are not the ones seen today. The seventeenth century showed a rise in stringed instruments such as violins cellos and violas, and they evolved into the heart of the modern orchestra. At this time, innovations occurred in instrument construction, music composition, and performance techniques.【신성찬 기자와 함께 TOEFL READING 즐기기】2018년 5월 8일

The next major development in orchestras came about due to Richard Wagner's need for music to accompany his musical dramas in the eighteenth century. His stage work called for unprecedented complexity and range of instrumentation, and most of these instruments, from the oboe to the clarinet, are still used today. He devised a larger role for the conductor in the direction of the musicians. Wagner's musica took a fresh look at the importance of tempo, dynamics the bowing of stringed instruments, and the role of principles in the orchestra. These innovations brought about a revolution in orchestral composition, which set the orchestral performance style for the following eighty years. 【신성찬 기자와 함께 TOEFL READING 즐기기】2018년 5월 31일

Modern orchestras have reached the point to which they can make use of a wide choice of instrumentation, and improvements are made as the opportunity comes along. By examining how orchestras evolved, we can gain a valuable insight into the development of music over the ages.
